Biography
Mr. Matereke is Director, Regional Operations/Head of Mission for the Afreximbank Anglophone West Africa Office based in Abuja, Nigeria since May 2026. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Matereke was Regional Director, East Africa. Mr. Matereke leads business development, manages client coverage, oversees stakeholder relations and drives financial initiatives of Afreximbank across its Anglophone West African participating states that include Cabo Verde, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone and The Gambia. His role covers the Bank's drive to support trade, industrialisation, development of critical minerals and oil and gas sectors across one of Africa’s most commercially active regions, with opportunities in energy, manufacturing, agriculture, commodities, infrastructure, financial services and intra-African trade. Mr. Matereke has over 20 years of experience in trade finance, structured trade and commodity finance, business development, and client relationship management across African markets. He joined Afreximbank in January 2011 as Trade Finance Manager, where he was responsible for business development, deal structuring, and customer relationship management across several countries in East and North Africa. In East Africa, Mr. Matereke led business development and client relationship management across the region supporting Afreximbank’s engagement with governments, financial institutions and corporates and advancing the Bank’s trade finance and development objectives. Before joining Afreximbank, Mr. Matereke held various roles with several banking institutions. He served as Senior Manager, Structured Trade and Commodity Finance at Nedbank Limited in Johannesburg, where he supported the bank’s African subsidiaries and operations outside South Africa. He also served as Senior Trade Finance Officer at PTA Bank, now TDB Bank, where he was responsible for deal structuring and managing customer relationships across the COMESA region.
